Forklifts are able to raise extremely heavy objects because they have a counterweight on the rear of the lift truck. The huge counterweight provides balance to the forklift so the equipment doesn't tip over when lifting heavy cargo. Forklifts are rated based on their load capacity. A small lift truck which could raise 1800 kilograms weighs approximately 4000 kilograms, that is the same as two full-size pickup trucks. The largest forklifts can have up to 36,000 kilograms of lifting capacity.

Considerations
In operating a lift truck, there are lots of safety issues. Like for instance, travel in reverse when driving down a ramp. You must also haul a load in reverse if the load interferes with vision and is bulky. Operators must be familiar with how to safely mount the lift using the "three-point stance."
